Venice Biennale
The world’s first international biennial art exhibition, established in 1895 to advance artistic innovation and promote contemporary culture on the global stage.
At a glance
The Venice Biennale represents a watershed moment in cultural institutions. Born from the vision of Venetian intellectuals and Mayor Riccardo Selvatico, it opened in 1895 as the inaugural biennial art exhibition worldwide. Today, the Pavilions occupy the Napoleonic Gardens in the Castello district, a public green space that has become synonymous with cutting-edge contemporary practice.
History
On 19 April 1893, the Venice municipal administration adopted a resolution to “establish a biennial national artistic exhibition.” This decision, championed by Mayor Selvatico and his intellectual circle, catalysed the first Biennale of Art in 1895, establishing a model that would reshape cultural institutions worldwide.
In 1930, the Biennale became an autonomous state body dedicated to promoting new European artistic trends. That same year saw the debut of the Contemporary Music Exhibition. The International Film Festival followed in 1932, followed by the Theatre Biennale in 1934. Both the Art and Film festivals remain the oldest of their respective genres still in operation.
What you see
The Biennale’s architectural presence centres on the Napoleonic Gardens, where national pavilions cluster among landscape and water. The gardens provide the primary setting for international displays, creating an open-air gallery where architecture itself becomes part of the curatorial experience.
Cultural significance
The Venice Biennale fundamentally altered how the world organises and perceives contemporary culture. Its biennial format—now replicated globally—originated here. The Italian term “biennale” itself acquired its modern meaning through this institution, becoming synonymous with major international recurring cultural events regardless of frequency.
As a laboratory for artistic innovation, the Biennale has consistently championed emerging movements and provided a platform where national cultures engage in sustained international dialogue.
