Vatican City Station

A railway terminus built for the Vatican State, connecting the independent city-state to Rome’s rail network.

At a glance

Vatican City Station is the only railway station serving the Holy See. Located within Vatican territory, it functions as a link between the autonomous city-state and Italy’s national rail system.

History

Construction began on 3 April 1929. The facility underwent testing throughout early 1932, with formal testing completed in March of that year. On 12 September 1934, ownership transferred from the Italian State Railways to the Vatican. The official handover occurred on 2 October 1934, conducted by architect Giuseppe Momo.

What you see

The station was designed by Giuseppe Momo, the architect responsible for the handover ceremony. The structure serves practical rail infrastructure purposes while respecting the Vatican’s modest scale and sovereignty as an independent state.
