Palace of Congresses

A modernist congress and exhibition complex occupying the grounds of Villa Vittoria, transformed from a private residence into a major cultural venue for Florence’s civic and business gatherings.

At a glance

The Palace of Congresses sits within the Da Basso Fortress near Santa Maria Novella station. Originally a private villa, it evolved into Florence’s principal conference and exhibition center through successive renovations and expansions spanning the mid-20th century.

History

The site originated as Villa Vittoria, established by the Strozzi of Mantua. The estate later passed to Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, becoming known as Villa Contini Bonacossi under his ownership.

Giovanni Michelucci undertook renovation in 1925. In 1964, Florence’s autonomous tourism authority acquired the property and commissioned extensive development. Between 1965 and 1974, architects Pierluigi Spadolini and P. Felli, among others, designed and constructed the Palazzo dei Congressi and Palazzo degli Affari, creating a unified exhibition-congress complex anchored by the historic fortress.

From the early 1990s, the Florence Convention Bureau unified management of the entire facility, including the addition of the Bambine e Bambini square. Today the palace hosts the Florentine Colloquia and serves as Florence’s primary conference venue.

What you see

The complex blends early 20th-century villa architecture with modernist congress halls designed during the 1960s and 1970s. The Palazzo dei Congressi and Palazzo degli Affari exemplify mid-century institutional design, positioned at the park’s edge to create dialogue with the older fortress structure and surrounding urban landscape.

Cultural significance

The Palace of Congresses represents Florence’s evolution as a contemporary cultural and business center beyond its Renaissance heritage. The transformation of a private aristocratic estate into a public civic facility illustrates post-war Italian efforts to democratize cultural institutions. The site remains integral to Florence’s conference and exhibition infrastructure.
