Donnafugata Castle Theatre
The Donnafugata Castle is a historic noble residence located 15 kilometres from Ragusa in the baroque heartland of southeastern Sicily. Within its richly decorated rooms the castle contains a private theatre, one of the most remarkable features of a complex that also encompasses a maze garden, a chapel and over 120 rooms furnished with period pieces. The name Donnafugata — meaning “woman who fled” — lends the castle an air of romantic legend that has made it one of the most visited heritage sites in the Val di Noto.

Overview
Donnafugata Castle is a grand Sicilian country residence 15 kilometres from the baroque city of Ragusa, set in the agricultural landscape of the Iblean plateau. The complex owes its current form primarily to the Arezzo di Trifiletti family, who transformed an older structure into an eclectic noble mansion over the course of the 19th century. Among its many remarkable interior spaces is a private theatre, complete with a painted stage curtain, a tiered auditorium and boxes, which served the entertainment of the family and their distinguished guests.
History
The estate at Donnafugata has roots going back to the medieval period, when a tower and settlement existed on the site. The name first appears in documentary sources in the 14th century; later etymology connected it to the story of a woman — variously identified as Queen Bianca of Navarre — who was held captive here, giving rise to the romantic legend embedded in the castle’s name. The Arezzo family acquired the property in the 18th century and undertook extensive rebuilding from the early 19th century, adding the neo-Gothic loggia, the formal gardens and the private theatre. The castle passed to the municipality of Ragusa in the 20th century and has been open to the public as a heritage site since 1982.
What you see
The castle’s most striking external feature is its neo-Gothic loggia of pointed arches, a deliberate historicist addition that gives the facade a picturesque, storybook quality at odds with the surrounding Sicilian baroque landscape. Inside, visitors move through over 120 furnished rooms including reception halls, a ballroom, a chapel, a billiard room and the private theatre, all retaining much of their 19th-century decoration. The theatre room features a painted ceiling, a small stage with original curtain, and a tiered seating area with boxes — a vivid illustration of aristocratic entertainment culture in 19th-century Sicily. The grounds include a famous maze hedge garden, a rare survival in Sicily.
Cultural significance
Donnafugata Castle is a listed national monument and one of the principal heritage attractions of the Val di Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage area renowned for its baroque towns. The castle’s private theatre is of particular interest as one of the very few surviving examples of the aristocratic domestic theatre tradition in Sicily, offering a window into the social and cultural habits of the island’s 19th-century nobility. The castle has also become well known through television, appearing as a location in the RAI series Il Commissario Montalbano.
