Overview

Spello is one of the best-preserved Roman and medieval towns in Umbria, retaining much of its ancient street plan and portions of its Augustan city walls. The Villa dei Mosaici was discovered accidentally during building work in the early 21st century and revealed a sequence of high-quality residential rooms with polychrome tesserae floors. The discovery prompted a major archaeological campaign and eventually the creation of a dedicated museum space integrating the in-situ mosaics within the urban fabric of the town.

History

Ancient Hispellum was an important municipium on the Via Flaminia, the main road connecting Rome to the Adriatic. The town flourished under Augustus and subsequent emperors, and in 337 AD it received a famous rescript from Constantine the Great (the Rescriptum Constantini) granting it the right to hold games in his honour. The wealthy residential class of Hispellum commissioned the fine mosaic floors now visible at the villa, reflecting the prosperity of a provincial town well integrated into imperial networks. The structures fell into disuse in late antiquity and were gradually buried beneath later construction.

What you see

The museum displays multiple rooms of mosaic flooring, including geometric carpet patterns, meander borders, and panels with figurative scenes. The polychrome tesserae — white, black, red, ochre, and blue — are remarkably intact, and their vivid patterns convey the elegance of a prosperous Roman household interior. Visitors circulate above the mosaics on purpose-built elevated walkways that allow detailed observation without risk of damage. Explanatory panels illustrate the techniques of Roman mosaic production and the iconographic programmes visible in each room.

Cultural significance

The Villa dei Mosaici ranks among the most important Roman mosaic discoveries in Umbria and contributes substantially to our understanding of provincial elite culture in central Italy during the imperial period. The site is also significant for demonstrating the continuity of urban settlement at Spello across Roman, medieval, and modern periods.
