Lavazza Caffè Museum (MUAL)
The Lavazza Caffè Museum — known as MUAL, Museo Ufficiale Archivio Lavazza — is a permanent museum dedicated to the history and culture of coffee, housed within the Lavazza campus in the Aurora district of Turin. Opened in 2018 as part of the company’s renovation of a historic industrial complex into its new headquarters, the museum spans more than 5,000 square metres across two buildings and traces 125 years of Lavazza history alongside the global story of coffee, from its Ethiopian origins to the modern espresso bar. The museum is notable for its immersive installations, interactive exhibits, and an important collection of vintage coffee-related art, packaging, and advertising material.

Overview
Lavazza was founded by Luigi Lavazza in 1895 at a grocery shop on Via San Tommaso in central Turin, and grew over the 20th century into one of Italy’s most internationally recognised brands. The MUAL museum sits within the Nuvola Lavazza complex, a landmark regeneration project by architect Cino Zucchi that converted a former General Electric factory into the company’s global headquarters. The museum’s permanent collection spans the anthropology of coffee, the history of the espresso machine, and the visual culture of Italian coffee advertising, including works by Federico Fellini, Armando Testa, and other collaborators.
History
Luigi Lavazza began blending coffee in Turin at the turn of the 20th century, at a time when the city’s elegant café culture — embodied by establishments like Caffè San Carlo and Caffè Torino — placed premium value on quality espresso. The company’s growth through the 20th century was closely intertwined with the development of Italian espresso culture and the export of Italian coffee taste worldwide. The decision to invest in a flagship museum and campus in the Aurora district, one of Turin’s post-industrial regeneration zones, reflects the company’s commitment both to preserving its heritage and to the city’s cultural landscape.
What you see
The museum unfolds across themed galleries covering coffee’s origins in Ethiopia and Yemen, its spread via Ottoman trade routes, and its transformation in Italy into the espresso tradition. Immersive installations recreate the sights, sounds, and aromas of historical coffee spaces, from an Ethiopian ceremony to a 1950s Milanese bar. An extensive archive of Lavazza advertising — including celebrated campaign images by photographers such as Helmut Newton and Elliott Erwitt — illustrates the intersection of food culture and visual art. Visitors also pass through a reconstruction of the original Via San Tommaso shop where the company was founded.
Cultural significance
The MUAL is one of the most ambitious corporate heritage museums in Italy and a significant contribution to Turin’s growing museum landscape. By situating the global history of coffee within the specific story of an Italian family business, the museum illuminates both the industrial heritage of Turin and the cultural dimensions of one of the world’s most consumed beverages.
