Stables of the Quirinale

A monumental stable transformed into Rome’s premier venue for large-scale temporary art exhibitions, located opposite the Quirinal Palace.

At a glance

The Stables of the Quirinale occupy approximately 1,500 square metres opposite the official residence of the President of the Republic. Built in the early eighteenth century, the structure served its original purpose until the mid-twentieth century, then underwent successive transformations—garage, carriage museum, and finally exhibition space. Today it ranks among Rome’s most visited venues for contemporary and international art.

History

Construction of the Palazzo delle Scuderie al Quirinale took place between 1722 and 1732, establishing the building as part of the Quirinal complex. It functioned as a stable through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries until 1938, when it was converted into a garage.

The 1980s brought a new identity: the structure became a museum dedicated to historic carriages. Between 1997 and 1999, architect Gae Aulenti oversaw a complete restoration in preparation for the 2000 Jubilee. President Ciampi inaugurated the new exhibition space, which was granted to the municipality of Rome.

What you see

The building reflects early-eighteenth-century architectural idioms adapted to its original practical function. Aulenti’s restoration maintained historical integrity while creating a flexible interior suited to contemporary exhibitions. The 1,500 square-metre space accommodates large-scale international shows with modern infrastructure.

Cultural significance

The Stables exemplify Rome’s ability to repurpose historic structures for contemporary cultural use. Once known as the Papal Stables of the Quirinale, the name was later simplified to clarify institutional ownership. The venue has become instrumental in Rome’s exhibition landscape, hosting major international art displays and contributing substantially to the city’s cultural programming.
