Soave Castle

SOAVE, VENETO

Soave Castle

A Scaliger fortress that dominated the medieval Veronese territory, Soave Castle stands as a symbol of the Della Scala family’s power and the town’s strategic importance.

At a glance

This medieval castle, once the seat of a captaincy governing twenty-two subject territories, reflects centuries of Veronese political upheaval. After centuries of use and decline, the fortress underwent significant restoration in 1890.

History

A diploma from Federico Barbarossa documents the castle’s early ownership by the Sambonifacio counts of Verona. When Ezzelino III da Romano rose to power as mayor in 1226, the Greppi counts held the fortress until 1270, when they ceded it to the Municipality of Verona.

The Della Scala family’s ascendancy transformed the castle into their most important symbol. The structure became the headquarters of a captaincy exercising jurisdiction over twenty-two surrounding territories. In 1379, Cansignorio della Scala endowed the town with the walls that remain visible today, reinforcing the castle’s defensive capabilities.

The fortress later fell into neglect and was reduced to use as a farm. Senator Giulio Camuzzoni, who served as mayor of Verona from 1867 to 1883, purchased the castle and commissioned its restoration in 1890.

What you see

The castle retains the fourteenth-century walls built under Cansignorio della Scala’s patronage. The Scaliger restoration and renewal work created a fortification befitting the Della Scala family’s prominence in the Veneto region.

Cultural significance

Soave Castle embodies the military and political strategies of medieval Verona. Its transformation from a minor stronghold into a Scaliger administrative center reflects the family’s expansion across the Venetian territories. The castle’s survival and nineteenth-century restoration preserve evidence of this dynamic period.
