Church of Santa Maria di Monserrato

A Romanesque cathedral that served as the seat of the Diocese of Sulci for three centuries, now standing at the heart of an abandoned medieval village.

At a glance

The Church of Santa Maria di Monserrato is a striking example of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia. Built between 1213 and 1282, it functioned as the island’s cathedral during the Catalan-Aragonese period, when it was dedicated to the Madonna of Monserrat. The building occupies the center of Tratalias Vecchia, the original settlement that preceded the modern town of Carbonia-Iglesias.

History

Construction began in 1213, when the Diocese of Sulci relocated from Sant’Antioco to Tratalias following repeated Saracen invasions. Two inscriptions inside the church mark the start and completion dates of the cathedral: 1213 and 1282. The bishop remained in Tratalias for nearly three centuries until 1503, when the diocesan seat transferred to Iglesias, ending the church’s role as an active cathedral.

What you see

The cathedral displays distinctive Romanesque features that are rare in the Sardinian architectural landscape. Its design reflects the cultural influences of the Catalan-Aragonese rulers who controlled the island during its construction and embellishment. The surviving inscriptions within the building provide direct evidence of its lengthy building campaign.

Cultural significance

This church embodies the complex religious and political history of medieval Sardinia, standing as a testament to the island’s struggle against maritime raids and its integration into the Crown of Aragon. The cathedral represents a period when Tratalias was a significant ecclesiastical and urban center, before being superseded by newer settlements.
