Pastore Palace

A neoclassical palazzo built for a wealthy merchant family, featuring frescoed apartments and hosting dignitaries including members of the House of Savoy.

At a glance

Pastore Palace is a neoclassical residence in San Martino Gusnago, constructed beginning in 1823 on a site where a sixteenth-century building previously stood. The palace comprises frescoed apartments on the upper floor and utility rooms at ground level, representing the wealth and status of the Pastore family.

History

Giuseppe Ignazio Pastore, a member of one of the richest families in the region, purchased the property and commissioned the new palace in 1823. The building was designed by architect Rodolfo Vantini of Brescia. The palace became known for hosting notable figures, including Amedeo di Savoia in 1866.

The Pastore family retained ownership for generations until the division of the property around 1950 among Alceo Pastore’s heirs. The Municipality acquired the palace in 1973 and undertook extensive restoration works.

What you see

The building exemplifies neoclassical design principles characteristic of early nineteenth-century Lombard architecture. Two frescoed apartments occupy the upper floor, their decorated walls reflecting the refined taste of the original owners. Ground-floor utility rooms served domestic and storage functions typical of the period.

Cultural significance

Pastore Palace represents the social and economic prominence of merchant families in nineteenth-century Lombardy. Its reception of royal visitors and preservation of decorative frescoes document the cultural aspirations of the provincial elite during the Risorgimento era.
