Casa Alessandri
The Alessandri were a Bergamasque noble family whose members became celebrated architects from the 17th century onwards, leaving their mark on the city’s architectural heritage.
At a glance
Casa Alessandri represents the urban residence of one of Bergamo’s most distinguished patrician families. The Alessandri rose to prominence in the city by the early 11th century and maintained their status through subsequent centuries, with later generations achieving renown as architects who shaped the region’s built environment.
History
The Alessandri family originated in Adrara as a patrician house. Some descendants settled in Castelli Calepio, where they competed with the counts of Calepio, while others relocated to Bergamo at the beginning of the 11th century. The family quickly became among the city’s most noble lineages.
In 1685, Giovanni Battista and Giulio Antonio Alessandri—uncle and nephew of the Bergamo branch—received the county of Villa di Caplecischis in the territory of Cividale del Friuli. Their noble titles were reconfirmed in 1818 and again in 1830, securing their status well into the modern era.
What you see
The residence stands on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, a principal thoroughfare in Bergamo’s lower city. As the urban seat of a family of architects, the casa reflects the refined taste of the Alessandri and their professional involvement in design and construction throughout the region.
Cultural significance
The Alessandri family’s contribution to Bergamasque culture extended beyond commerce and politics into architecture itself. From the 17th century onward, family members became recognised architects, influencing the aesthetic and structural development of northern Italian urban and ecclesiastical spaces. The family name itself—derived from Alessandro or Alexandros, meaning “defender of one’s subjects”—reflects the patrician values of protection and civic responsibility that characterised Bergamo’s ruling class.
