National Gallery of Cosenza — Arnone Palace
The National Gallery of Cosenza, housed in the historic Palazzo Arnone in the old town centre, is the principal fine-art museum of Calabria. Its collections span paintings, sculptures, and graphic works from the 15th century to the contemporary period, with a particular focus on southern Italian and Calabrian artists. The neoclassical palace that contains the gallery is itself a monument of early 19th-century civic architecture in Cosenza.

Overview
Palazzo Arnone is named after the aristocratic Arnone family who owned the building before the Italian state acquired it for public use. Today it houses the National Gallery of Cosenza, which is the most important art museum in the region of Calabria. The gallery’s permanent collection, regularly enriched by donations and transfers from the Italian state, provides a broad overview of Italian painting and sculpture while giving special attention to works produced in Calabria and by Calabrian artists across several centuries.
History
Palazzo Arnone was constructed in the early 19th century in the historic centre of Cosenza, on a prominent position above the confluence of the Crati and Busento rivers — the legendary burial site of the Visigothic king Alaric I (died 410 CE). The building was converted into a gallery in the 20th century as part of a broader effort to establish a public art institution for the region. The gallery was reorganised and expanded several times throughout the 20th century, and continues to acquire contemporary works that reflect the cultural vitality of modern Calabria.
What you see
The gallery’s permanent collection includes Italian Old Master paintings, 19th-century academic canvases, and an important section devoted to 20th-century and contemporary art. Works by Calabrian painters from the 19th and 20th centuries represent a significant portion of the holdings, complemented by sculptures, prints, and drawings. Special exhibitions on rotating themes are regularly mounted in the palace’s halls, which retain period architectural details including vaulted ceilings and decorative plasterwork.
Cultural significance
As the only national-level fine-art gallery in Calabria, Palazzo Arnone plays a central role in preserving and making accessible the artistic heritage of a region often overshadowed by the more celebrated museums of northern and central Italy. The museum anchors Cosenza’s cultural identity and supports scholarly research into Calabrian art history. Its location in the medieval historic centre reinforces connections between the gallery and the wider heritage landscape of one of Italy’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.
