The Vistula Museum

A striking contemporary pavilion designed by Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz, housing the Museum of Modern Art’s experimental exhibition space on Warsaw’s riverfront.

At a glance

The Vistula Museum opened in spring 2017 as a new exhibition venue for the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. Located beside the Copernicus Science Center and the University of Warsaw Library, this pavilion was previously lent to Berlin’s Kunsthalle between 2008 and 2010. The building was generously provided free of charge by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art foundation, a Vienna-based contemporary arts organization.

History

The pavilion was originally designed by Adolf Krischanitz and served as temporary housing for the Kunsthalle in Berlin from 2008 to 2010. Following that period, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art foundation—founded in 2002 by Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza—offered the structure to Warsaw’s Museum of Modern Art. The foundation, dedicated to disseminating experimental art and architecture, lent the pavilion at no cost to support the museum’s expansion.

What you see

Krischanitz’s design is distinguished by a bold artistic vision: the entire exterior is completely covered with paintings. In 2016, Polish artist Sàawomir Pawszak won the competition to create the facade project, with his work applied to the building’s surfaces in spring 2017. Inside, the pavilion houses exhibition galleries alongside a café, bookshops, and a small education center. Surrounding terraces provide space for outdoor activities and offer views toward the Vistula River.

Cultural significance

The Vistula Museum represents a distinctive approach to contemporary museum presentation, where architecture and visual art converge on the building’s envelope. As an experimental exhibition space, it reflects the Thyssen-Bornemisza foundation’s mission to advance innovative approaches to displaying modern art. Its location on Warsaw’s revitalized riverfront positions it within the city’s growing cultural corridor alongside other major institutions.
