Medio Campidano Province

A central-southern Sardinian province created in 2001 and activated in 2016, comprising twenty-eight municipalities formerly part of the Province of Cagliari.

At a glance

Medio Campidano represents a significant administrative reorganisation of Sardinia’s interior. The province encompasses a historical-geographical region with roots in nineteenth-century territorial division, now governed from Sanluri.

History

The origins of this region trace to the Royal Edict of 4 May 1807, when Sardinia was divided into fifteen prefectures. Medio Campidano was among them, historically based in Villacidro.

Modern provincial status arrived through regional law n° 9 of 12 July 2001, formally establishing Medio Campidano as a distinct administrative entity. The province became fully operational in 2005 following electoral processes that separated it from the Province of Cagliari.

What you see

As an administrative province rather than a single monument, Medio Campidano encompasses diverse landscapes and settlements. The region spans twenty-eight municipalities including Barumini, Sanluri, and Villacidro, each with their own architectural heritage.

Cultural significance

Medio Campidano embodies the evolution of Sardinian regional governance. Its creation reflects contemporary administrative needs while honouring historical territorial traditions rooted in early-nineteenth-century prefectural systems.
