Overview
The Centro Luigi Pecci houses a permanent collection of contemporary art spanning several decades, alongside a Centre of Information and Documentation of visual arts and an active education department. The museum organises temporary exhibitions, residencies and public programmes that connect the Prato collection to international contemporary practice. It sits on Viale della Repubblica, one of Prato’s main thoroughfares, making it an accessible and visible landmark in the city’s cultural geography.
History
The centre was inaugurated in 1988, conceived by the Pecci family and the city of Prato as an instrument for urban renewal and cultural investment in a city historically defined by its textile industry. The original building was designed by Florentine architect Italo Gamberini in a rationalist modernist idiom. Following a major expansion project, the centre reopened in 2016 with a new wing designed by Dutch architect Maurice Nio, doubling the exhibition space and adding facilities for residencies and events. The expansion affirmed the Pecci’s ambition to operate at a European institutional level.
What you see
The centre presents a striking combination of the original 1988 building and Nio’s 2016 extension, the latter characterised by its bold curved form and dynamic exterior. Exhibition galleries occupy several floors and are designed to accommodate large-scale contemporary installations, video works and painting alike. Outdoor sculpture installations and a public garden extend the museum’s presence into the surrounding urban landscape, while the documentation centre provides archival resources for researchers.
Cultural significance
The Centro Luigi Pecci holds an important place in the history of Italian cultural policy, representing a pioneering example of private philanthropic initiative combined with public institutional commitment to contemporary art outside the traditional cultural capitals of Rome, Milan and Turin. Its longevity and international exhibition programme have made it a model for regional contemporary art institutions across Italy and Europe.
