Kurhaus
An Art Nouveau landmark built in 1874 and radically transformed in the early 20th century, the Kurhaus stands as one of the Alpine region’s most celebrated spa buildings and architectural treasures.
At a glance
The Kurhaus is a defining symbol of Merano’s identity as a spa destination. Originally designed and constructed in 1874, it underwent comprehensive renovation and expansion between 1912 and 1914 under the direction of Vienna’s Friedrich Ohmann, who transformed it into a masterpiece of Art Nouveau style.
History
Designed in 1873 by architect Josef Czerny, the Kurhaus was inaugurated on November 14, 1874, illuminated by over 120 gas lamps—a spectacular display of period technology. The original structure comprised only the current west wing.
As Merano’s reputation as a spa town grew, the building required modernization. Electric lighting was installed in 1897 and new reading rooms were added. The increasing flow of guests soon strained its capacity, prompting the decision for a radical renovation beginning in 1912. Friedrich Ohmann’s redesign and expansion proved transformative, establishing the building’s enduring prominence.
What you see
The Kurhaus exemplifies Art Nouveau design as interpreted by one of Vienna’s leading architects. Ohmann’s 1912–1914 intervention enlarged the structure significantly while maintaining stylistic coherence, creating the complex visitors encounter today. The building’s elegant proportions and decorative details reflect the sophistication expected of Central European spa architecture in the Belle Époque and early twentieth century.
Cultural significance
The Kurhaus represents both the architectural ambitions of a prosperous Alpine spa town and the cultural influence of Vienna during the height of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Its Art Nouveau vocabulary connects Merano to broader European artistic movements while remaining rooted in local South Tyrolean identity. The building chronicles shifts in technology and hospitality—from gas lamps to electric light—and embodies the leisure culture that defined this era.
