Overview

Ascoli Piceno is the capital of its eponymous province in southern Marche, set at the confluence of the Tronto and Castellano rivers in a natural amphitheatre of mountains. The city’s historic centre is built almost entirely in local travertine, giving it a silvery, luminous character that sets it apart from any other Italian medieval city. Its most celebrated public space, Piazza del Popolo, is widely considered one of the finest squares in Italy.

History

Ascoli Piceno was the chief settlement of the ancient Piceni people, later becoming a significant Roman municipality known as Asculum. During the medieval and Renaissance periods it developed the urban fabric still visible today: towers, Gothic palaces, and the travertine loggia of the Piazza del Popolo. The culinary tradition of olive ascolane — large Ascolana tenera olives stuffed with spiced meat and deep fried — was documented here by the 19th century and has since spread throughout Italy.

What you see

The area around Il Desco lies within Ascoli Piceno’s compact historic centre, where travertine paving and facades create a monochrome elegance broken only by the colour of café awnings and market stalls. The Tronto river runs close to the centre, and the medieval Ponte di Cecco crosses it at the edge of the old town. The city’s many towers — including the 13th-century Torre degli Ercolani — punctuate the skyline visible from street level throughout the centre.

Cultural significance

Ascoli Piceno preserves one of central Italy’s most coherent medieval urban environments, largely untouched by modern redevelopment. The city’s Quintana jousting festival, held twice yearly since 1955 but rooted in medieval tradition, draws thousands of visitors and reflects the strong civic identity of its six historic rioni. The ascolana olive, granted IGP status, is the most tangible export of a culinary culture that runs deep in local life.
