ICCROM Headquarters
The global centre for conservation training and expertise, ICCROM’s Rome headquarters coordinates international efforts to preserve cultural heritage across 136 member states.
At a glance
ICCROM (International Center for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage worldwide. Based in Rome since 1959, it operates through training programmes, research, information exchange and collaborative partnerships among nations.
History
The Centre emerged from a proposal presented at the UNESCO General Conference in New Delhi in 1956. Three years later, Rome was chosen as its permanent home. Initially located near Piazza San Francesco di Paola, close to the Central Institute for Restoration, ICCROM eventually relocated to the monumental San Michele a Ripa complex, where it remains today.
What you see
The headquarters occupies part of San Michele a Ripa, a historic complex in Rome’s Trastevere district. The building’s institutional character reflects its role as a hub for international conservation work, providing offices, training facilities and research spaces.
Cultural significance
ICCROM serves as the primary international forum for conservation expertise and policy-making. Its member states—now 136—rely on the organization to advance professional standards in heritage preservation, conduct cutting-edge research and build capacity across regions facing conservation challenges. The organization amplifies awareness of cultural heritage’s fragility and importance globally.
