Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center
The Heydar Aliyev Center is a 57,500 m² building complex in Baku, Azerbaijan, designed by Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012. Celebrated for its distinctive flowing, curved architecture that deliberately eschews sharp angles, it stands as one of the most recognised works of 21st-century parametric design. The centre serves as a major cultural venue for exhibitions, conferences, and events, and is named after Azerbaijan’s former president Heydar Aliyev.

Overview
The Heydar Aliyev Center occupies 57,500 square metres in the heart of Baku and is widely regarded as the centrepiece of Azerbaijan’s contemporary architectural identity. Designed by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, the building is notable for its seamless white skin of continuous undulating surfaces. It was awarded the Design of the Year prize by the Design Museum in London in 2014.
History
The centre was commissioned by the Azerbaijani government and named in honour of Heydar Aliyev, the country’s leader from 1993 to 2003. Zaha Hadid Architects won the design competition, and construction was carried out by the main contractor Dia Holdings. The building opened officially in 2012 and quickly became an international landmark, attracting architectural tourists from around the world.
What you see
The exterior is defined by a continuous surface that rises from the ground plane, folds upward, and forms the roof in one uninterrupted gesture — a hallmark of Zaha Hadid’s parametric approach. Inside, the building contains three main halls for conferences and performances, permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, and a museum dedicated to Heydar Aliyev. The interior maintains the same fluid language, with curving ramps and balconies that dissolve the boundary between floor, wall, and ceiling.
Cultural significance
The Heydar Aliyev Center has become the most internationally recognised symbol of modern Baku and a flagship project of Azerbaijan’s post-Soviet cultural rebranding. As one of Zaha Hadid’s most completed large-scale works, it is studied worldwide in architecture schools and frequently cited in discussions of 21st-century parametric design. Its image appears on Azerbaijani promotional materials and is considered a defining landmark of the South Caucasus region.

Getting there
The centre is located on Heydar Aliyev Avenue in Baku, accessible by metro (Koroghlu station on the Green Line) and by taxi or bus from central Baku. The building is a short drive from Baku city centre and is well signposted. Parking is available on site.
