Overview

The hotel was developed by entrepreneur Nicola Spada as part of a broader effort to transform the Venice Lido into a fashionable seaside resort to rival those of the French Riviera. It opened in 1908 to immediate acclaim, with its exotic Moorish domes and minarets making it instantly recognisable from the sea. The establishment of the Venice Film Festival in 1932, the world’s oldest film festival, brought a new wave of celebrity to the Excelsior, which hosted stars including Marlene Dietrich, Orson Welles, and Cary Grant. The hotel underwent major renovations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries to preserve its historic fabric while modernising its facilities.

The private boat dock allows guests arriving by water taxi from Venice to land directly at the hotel entrance.

Getting there
The Venice Lido is reached by ACTV vaporetto (water bus) from Venice’s San Marco or Santa Lucia station waterfront, with lines 1, 5.1, and 5.2 serving the Lido Santa Maria Elisabetta landing. From the landing, the Excelsior is approximately 500 metres on foot along the Lungomare Marconi, or a short taxi or bicycle ride. During the Film Festival period, private water taxis operate frequent shuttle services between the hotel and central Venice.
