Duca Di Dolle
A former medieval convent transformed into a celebrated wine estate, where literary figures once gathered and the landscape itself became a subject of cultural preservation.
At a glance
Duca Di Dolle occupies the site of a 16th-century Camaldolese monastery in the Veneto hills. The estate retains the original convent entrance portal and partially concealed cloister arcades. Today it functions as a wine producer and cultural landmark.
History
The Camaldolese friars established a monastic community here and initiated the region’s winemaking tradition, making the hermitage a focal point for the surrounding area. The property later passed to the Brandolini family before becoming the home of Nino Mura, a self-taught poet and nature enthusiast, in the early 20th century.
Between the 1950s and 1960s, Mura welcomed selected guests including poets Giovanni Comisso and Andrea Zanzotto, hosting literary evenings at the estate. In 1974, Antonio Bisol acquired the property from Mura and undertook careful restoration work. Since 2011, Duca Di Dolle has operated as an independent entity within the Baccini group.
What you see
The convent’s original 16th-century entrance portal survives intact. The cloister arcades remain partially visible, though portions have been enclosed over time. These medieval elements coexist with later structures built during successive periods of ownership and use.
Cultural significance
The Borgo di Rolle was described by poet Andrea Zanzotto as “a postcard sent by the gods.” The site was designated Italy’s first FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) Point in recognition of its role in preserving the landscape and cultural heritage of the region. The estate represents a rare convergence of monastic tradition, agrarian identity, and 20th-century literary culture.
