Defense Museum — Forsvarsmuseet
The Norwegian Armed Forces Museum (Forsvarsmuseet) is Norway’s national museum of military history, located within the historic Akershus Fortress complex in central Oslo. Its collections span eight centuries of Norwegian military activity, from medieval castle warfare through Viking-era arms to the campaigns of the Second World War and Norway’s role in NATO. Housed partly in a 19th-century arsenal building, the museum is one of the most visited cultural institutions in Oslo and the principal custodian of the nation’s defence heritage.

Overview
Forsvarsmuseet was founded in 1860, making it one of the oldest established museums in Norway. It is administered by the Norwegian Armed Forces and is dedicated to preserving and communicating the military history of Norway from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. The museum’s location within Akershus Fortress, itself a functioning military installation, gives visitors an immediate encounter with the physical setting of Norwegian military and political history. The permanent collections include weapons, uniforms, vehicles, and extensive documentary archives.
History
Akershus Fortress has dominated Oslo’s harbour since its construction began around 1299 under King Haakon V. The fortress served as the seat of royal power, a prison for political opponents, and a key defensive installation through successive centuries of Scandinavian conflict. The defence museum was formally established within its grounds in 1860, drawing on existing regimental collections. The Second World War greatly expanded its scope: the fortress was occupied by German forces from 1940 to 1945, and several Norwegian resistance fighters were executed there, lending the site particular gravity in Norwegian collective memory.
What you see
The main exhibition building displays an extensive array of edged weapons, firearms, artillery, uniforms, and military equipment covering eight centuries of Norwegian defence. A dedicated Second World War section presents the German invasion of April 1940, the Norwegian military resistance, and the liberation in May 1945, using original documents, photographs, and personal artefacts. Outdoor exhibits in the fortress courtyard include historic artillery pieces, and the adjacent Akershus Castle itself can be visited separately, offering views over the Oslo Fjord and the city’s historic harbour.
Cultural significance
Forsvarsmuseet occupies a site central to Norwegian national identity, where medieval royal power, early modern statecraft, and 20th-century resistance against occupation all intersect. Its role as the custodian of the nation’s military memory gives it significance beyond military history alone, encompassing themes of sovereignty, occupation, and democratic resilience that remain vivid in Norwegian public consciousness. The execution ground within Akershus where resistance heroes fell is treated as a national sacred site.
