Cologne Cathedral
Rising 157 metres above the Rhine, this twin-spired masterpiece stands as Germany’s tallest cathedral and most visited landmark, embodying six centuries of faith, ambition, and architectural vision.
At a glance
Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and one of Europe’s supreme achievements in Gothic architecture. At 515 feet, it ranks as the world’s tallest twin-spired church and the third-tallest church in Europe. The cathedral draws approximately 6 million visitors annually, making it Germany’s most-visited landmark.
History
Construction began in 1248, when Cologne’s medieval builders envisioned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and serve as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Work halted around 1560, leaving the cathedral incomplete for nearly three centuries.
Renewed efforts began around 1814, but funding remained inadequate until the 1840s. The cathedral was finally completed to its original medieval plan in 1880, a triumph of persistence and restoration that spanned over six centuries.
What you see
The cathedral’s defining feature is its pair of colossal spires, which create the largest façade of any church in the world. The twin towers rise symmetrically above the Gothic body, their pointed arches and intricate stonework characteristic of high medieval design.
Within Cologne’s skyline, only the telecommunications tower exceeds the cathedral in height—testament to its monumental proportions.
Cultural significance
Cologne Cathedral stands as a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value and a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, recognizing its universal importance as a monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture.
