Civita di Bagnoregio

A near-abandoned hilltop village in Lazio’s badlands, connected to the mainland by a single reinforced concrete footbridge and slowly receding into the eroded landscape that surrounds it.

At a glance

Civita sits isolated in the valley badlands between Lake Bolsena and the Tiber valley, inhabited by only sixteen residents as of 2011. The village stands on a progressively eroding hilltop, its geology shaped by two distinct strata: an ancient clay base of marine origin beneath harder tuffaceous and lava layers above. Streams, weather, and historical deforestation have carved the surrounding landscape into characteristic gullies and ravines.

History

The two main valleys flanking Civita—the Fossato del Rio Torbido and the Fossato del Rio Chiaro—were once gentler and more passable. An ancient road once crossed these valleys, linking the Tiber valley to Lake Bolsena and serving as a vital connection across the region. Over centuries, erosion and geological processes transformed the accessible route into a dramatic landscape of deep gullies and isolated outcrops.

What you see

The village occupies a narrow ridge surrounded by eroded badlands. Access is restricted to a reinforced concrete pedestrian bridge constructed in 1965, the sole connection between Civita and the mainland. The municipality of Bagnoregio permits authorized bicycles and motorcycles to cross at specified times to serve residents and workers.

Cultural significance

Civita is known as “the dying city,” a sobering nickname reflecting its precarious future. The village embodies the dramatic interplay between geology and human settlement—a place where natural processes of erosion slowly consume the ground beneath inhabited structures. Its extreme isolation and dwindling population have made it a symbol of rural abandonment and environmental change.
