National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art
Italy’s premier institution for modern and contemporary art, housing nearly 20,000 works that trace artistic movements from Neoclassicism to the present day.
At a glance
The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art preserves the most comprehensive collection of Italian and international art spanning the 19th to 21st centuries. The collection encompasses paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations representing major artistic currents: from Neoclassicism and Impressionism through Divisionism, Futurism, and Surrealism, with particular strength in Italian art from the 1920s–1940s and the Roman School movement.
History
The museum’s conservation laboratories were established in 1976, marking a significant commitment to modern art preservation. Today, they remain the only state museum institution in Italy dedicated operationally to the conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary artworks.
What you see
The collection spans artistic expression across two centuries. Visitors encounter works from the historical avant-gardes of the early 20th century alongside contemporary installations. The Painting and Sculpture Restoration Laboratory and Graphics Restoration Laboratory operate within the museum, making conservation work visible and accessible to researchers.
Cultural significance
This institution documents Italian artistic development from the 19th century to today through its core holdings and extensive archives. The museum’s specialized library of 79,500 catalogued volumes and collection of 20th-century Italian exhibition catalogs make it essential for scholars of modern art history. The restoration laboratories preserve works that define contemporary artistic heritage.
