Civic Museum of the South Lagoon

The Civic Museum of the South Lagoon (Museo Civico della Laguna Sud) in Chioggia, Venice, is the principal museum of the southern Venice Lagoon, documenting the natural environment, fishing culture, and artistic heritage of one of the most distinctive communities in the Veneto. Housed in the convent of San Francesco fuori le Mura, the museum presents collections ranging from Venetian-era archaeological finds and lagoon ecology to the tools, boats, and traditions of Chioggia’s centuries-old fishing industry. It is managed by the municipality of Chioggia and forms the cultural heart of a city that has too often been overshadowed by its more famous neighbour.

Overview

Chioggia occupies a long, narrow island at the southern end of the Venice Lagoon, connected to the mainland and to the barrier beaches of the Sottomarina by bridges. Unlike Venice, Chioggia developed primarily as a fishing and salt-production centre, and its culture is markedly distinct from that of the Serenissima despite centuries of Venetian governance. The Civic Museum of the South Lagoon brings together the material evidence of this history under one roof, from Etruscan and Roman finds recovered from the lagoon bed to the painted ex-votos of fishermen’s chapels.

History

The museum’s collections were assembled in the late nineteenth century during a period of civic pride and regional identity formation across northern Italy. The Franciscan convent of San Francesco fuori le Mura, which houses the museum, dates to the thirteenth century and was suppressed during the Napoleonic reorganisation of religious institutions in the early nineteenth century. After serving various public functions, the building was adapted to museum use, and its cloisters and halls now provide an appropriately atmospheric setting for the lagoon collections. Chioggia itself was a major naval base of the Venetian Republic and the site of the decisive War of Chioggia (1378–1381) against Genoa.

What you see

The permanent collection is organised around the themes of the lagoon ecosystem, fishing technology, Venetian-era civic history, and religious art. Highlights include scale models of traditional lagoon boats — the bragozzo, batèla, and peata — displayed alongside the nets, oars, and navigational instruments once used by Chioggia’s fishing fleet. Archaeological sections present pottery, glass, and metalwork recovered from the lagoon and the surrounding territory. Religious art from suppressed local churches includes altarpieces and devotional panels of the Venetian school.

Cultural significance

The Civic Museum of the South Lagoon is essential for understanding how Venice’s southern lagoon was inhabited, worked, and governed across two and a half millennia. It is also the primary repository of Chioggia’s intangible heritage — the fishing traditions, dialects, and community practices that Carlo Goldoni immortalised in his eighteenth-century comedy Le baruffe chiozzotte.

Practical information

The museum is located on the island of Chioggia, a short walk from the main Corso del Popolo. Check the official website of the Comune di Chioggia for current opening hours, admission fees, and any temporary exhibitions. The museum is closed on Mondays in most seasons.

Getting there

Chioggia is reachable from Venice by bus from the Piazzale Roma (ACTV bus to Chioggia via Pellestrina ferry, approximately 1.5 hours) or by car via the A4 motorway and the Romea state road (SR 309) from Padua or Mestre. From the Chioggia bus terminus, the museum is a short walk along the Corso del Popolo toward the north of the island.
