Civic Art Gallery of the Francesco Cilea Theater

A municipal pinacoteca housed in a 1920s theater, displaying Renaissance paintings by Antonello da Messina alongside modern works acquired through bequest and donation.

At a glance

The Civic Art Gallery originated within Reggio Calabria’s ancient city museum, which opened in 1882. Today it occupies the restored Francesco Cilea Theater, a municipal building of the 1920s decorated with stucco. The collection unites works previously scattered across municipal offices and regional institutions, consolidated here following a major restoration project completed in 2008.

History

The gallery’s roots trace to the city museum inaugurated on June 18, 1882. For over a century, the Municipality’s art holdings remained dispersed—housed in the National Museum of Magna Graecia, Palazzo San Giorgio, the Pietro De Nava Library, and other locations. In 2008, a comprehensive project reunited these scattered collections within the Francesco Cilea Theater, creating a dedicated pinacoteca. The restoration and curatorial arrangement were overseen by Professor Fabio Mariano.

What you see

The gallery occupies a municipal theater built in the 1920s, notable for its stucco decorations. Inside, architectural elements of the theater remain integrated with the exhibition spaces. Works span from fifteenth-century wood panels through contemporary sculpture and painting, creating a chronological and stylistic sweep across five centuries of Italian artistic production.

Cultural significance

The collection includes two panels detached from polyptychs by Antonello da Messina, executed between 1460 and 1465—exemplary works of early Renaissance Sicilian painting. Beyond these masterpieces, the gallery preserves fifteenth-century wooden tablets and modern canvases reflecting Calabrian and broader Italian cultural heritage. The institution anchors regional art history within an accessible civic setting.
