Chiesa di San Pietro extra muros
The Chiesa di San Pietro extra muros (Church of Saint Peter outside the walls) is a Romanesque church in Bosa, in the Oristano region of Sardinia. Built on the right bank of the Temo river outside the medieval town, it is among the finest examples of the Pisan-Romanesque style in Sardinia and retains a remarkable cycle of fourteenth-century frescoes in its interior, attributed to the Maestro di Bosa and depicting scenes from the life of Saint Peter.

Overview
San Pietro extra muros sits along the Temo, Sardinia’s only navigable river, a short distance downstream from Bosa’s medieval centre and its Malaspina castle. The designation extra muros — outside the walls — reflects its siting beyond the medieval town boundary, a common pattern for early Christian and Romanesque churches in Sardinia that often occupied sites of pre-existing cult significance. The church’s Pisan stonework and refined proportions signal the strong Pisan commercial and artistic influence over the island’s western coast in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
History
The church was founded in the eleventh or early twelfth century during the period when the Sardinian giudicati (indigenous kingdoms) maintained close cultural and trade ties with Pisa, whose craftsmen spread the Romanesque style across the island. Bosa became the seat of a diocese and San Pietro served as the cathedral of that see for a significant period. In the fourteenth century, Catalan-Aragonese patronage and local investment funded a rich campaign of interior fresco painting. The church lost its cathedral status as Bosa’s ecclesiastical arrangements changed, but it survived intact as a cherished civic monument.
What you see
The exterior displays the characteristic Pisan aesthetic: precise limestone ashlar courses, blind arcading, and a campanile integrated into the main facade. The interior is a single nave with a semicircular apse, its walls covered with the fourteenth-century fresco cycle attributed to the Maestro di Bosa — an anonymous painter whose expressive figures draw on both Italian Gothic and local Sardinian convention. Scenes from the life of Saint Peter, donor portraits, and decorative borders fill the nave walls with an intensity of colour rarely found in Sardinian churches of this period.
Cultural significance
San Pietro extra muros is listed among the most significant Romanesque monuments in Sardinia and the fresco cycle is considered a rare survival of medieval painting on the island. The church anchors a broader heritage itinerary of Bosa that includes the Malaspina castle, the tanning district, and the historic Sa Costa neighbourhood.
