History
Construction began during the first Norman rule of the Altavilla dukes. The fortress was built in two distinct phases, separated by centuries, reflecting the architectural preferences and military requirements of its Norman and Swabian periods. The castle’s ancient moat, a defining feature of its medieval defense system, remained in place until 1836, when it was deliberately filled and repurposed as a public street.
