Castello di Lombardia

The Castello di Lombardia is a massive medieval fortress in the hilltop city of Enna, at the geographical centre of Sicily. Covering approximately 26,000 square metres, it is one of the largest and most ancient castle complexes in Italy. Originally built during the Norman period on earlier Arab foundations, the castle was substantially expanded by the Swabian emperors and later by the Aragonese, retaining twenty of its original thirty towers and serving today as a landmark venue for the annual Floreal Festival, a medieval pageant that brings its courtyards to life each spring.

Overview

The Castello di Lombardia dominates the eastern edge of Enna’s plateau at 931 metres above sea level, commanding views across virtually the entire island of Sicily on clear days. With a footprint of some 26,000 square metres, it ranks among Italy’s largest medieval castle enclosures and is the defining monument of Enna, a city known as the “navel of Sicily” for its central position on the island. Three of the original thirty towers survive to substantial height, including the Torre Pisana, which houses a panoramic terrace open to visitors.

History

The hilltop had been fortified since antiquity, and Arab rulers constructed defensive works here during Sicily’s Islamic period (9th–11th centuries). The Normans under Roger I captured Enna in 1087 and built a substantial castle on the Arab foundations, integrating it into the network of fortifications that secured their rule over the island’s interior. The Swabian emperor Frederick II, who held Enna dear and visited it several times, undertook major expansions in the early 13th century. Further construction and repairs were carried out by the Aragonese during the 14th century, when the castle also served as a royal residence. Peter II of Aragon died within its walls in 1342, attesting to its prestige as a royal seat.

What you see

Three substantial towers anchor the enclosure: the Torre Pisana, the Torre dei Quattro Venti (“Tower of the Four Winds”), and the Torre San Martino, all of which preserve their medieval masonry largely intact. Long stretches of curtain wall with merlons connect the towers, enclosing three sequential courtyards of progressively higher security. Inside the innermost court, the remains of a medieval cistern and palatine chapel have been identified. From the Torre Pisana’s summit, on clear days the view extends to Etna to the east, the Madonie mountains to the north, and as far as both coasts of Sicily.

Cultural significance

The Castello di Lombardia is a landmark of the Norman-Arab-Byzantine heritage of Sicily, a tradition recognised by UNESCO as an Outstanding Universal Value. It is also central to Enna’s cultural calendar: each May the Floreal Festival fills the castle’s courtyards with medieval pageantry, costume parades, and falconry displays, drawing visitors from across Sicily and mainland Italy.
