Castello Bolognini
A fortified square castle with four corner towers and a detached tower, built for Regina della Scala in the late 1300s and later converted to a noble summer residence.
At a glance
Castello Bolognini is a quadrangular fortress erected in the second half of the fourteenth century under the patronage of Regina della Scala, wife of Bernabò Visconti. Originally conceived as a military stronghold for the Visconti Signory of Milan, it evolved into a residential palace. Today it houses two museums dedicated to agricultural heritage and traditional breadmaking.
History
Regina della Scala commissioned the castle during the height of Visconti power in Lombardy. Built as a defensive structure for the ruling family’s domain, the fortress served strategic purposes during Milan’s medieval period. Over time, its military function diminished and the building was repurposed as an aristocratic summer retreat, reflecting a broader shift in Renaissance fortified architecture toward residential comfort.
What you see
The castle follows a rigid square plan reinforced by four matching square towers at its corners. A fifth, more massive tower stands detached from the main structure, connected via an elevated covered passage—a design solution that provided both defensive advantage and visual drama. Numerous biforate and triforate windows punctuate the façades, their paired and triple divisions softening the fortress’s austere military profile while allowing light and air into the interior spaces.
Cultural significance
The castle exemplifies the transition from medieval military architecture to palatial Renaissance design. Its dual function as fortress and residence reflects the political aspirations of the Visconti, one of northern Italy’s most powerful dynasties. The building remains an important record of fourteenth-century Lombard construction and aristocratic life.
