Casa Matha of Ravenna
One of the world’s oldest surviving associations, Casa Matha has served Ravenna’s fishing community for over a millennium, evolving from a medieval guild into a modern institution promoting sustainable practices and cultural heritage.
At a glance
Casa Matha is a venerable civic and professional association rooted in Ravenna’s maritime heritage. Originally a fishermen’s guild, it functioned as a market hub and mutual-aid society before transforming into a contemporary organization dedicated to environmental stewardship and cultural education.
History
Scholarly tradition, tracing back to Girolamo Rossi and Desiderio Pasolini, links Casa Matha to the Scola piscatorum Patoreno, documented in the Charta Piscatoria of 943. This fishermen’s association operated along the Badoreno, one of the Po’s branches threading through medieval Ravenna.
The name “Casa Matha” first appears around 1268 in the Municipality of Ravenna’s statutes, though its precise etymology remains unclear. The oldest surviving statute, from 1304, preserves crucial records of the organization’s structure and governance—documents referencing even earlier bylaws now lost.
Through the medieval and early modern periods, Casa Matha remained central to Ravenna’s economic and social fabric. The city fish market, housed within the Casa, operated until 1921, anchoring the institution to daily civic life for centuries.
What you see
The Casa Matha building stands as a tangible reminder of Ravenna’s commercial past. Located in the historic city center, its structure embodies the practical needs of a working guild—meeting halls, storage, and market facilities designed to serve the fishing profession.
Cultural significance
Casa Matha represents an unbroken institutional continuity spanning over a thousand years. Few associations anywhere claim such longevity, making it a rare window into medieval guild life and the evolution of civic organization from feudal times to the present.
Today, the Order remains active, promoting sustainable fishing and aquaculture while hosting educational programs in art, humanities, and environmental studies. It functions as both custodian of Ravenna’s maritime identity and an agent of contemporary conservation.
