Boncompagni Museum for Decorative Arts

A museum of decorative arts, costume and Italian fashion housed in an early twentieth-century Eclectic villa in central Rome.

At a glance

The Boncompagni Museum occupies the Boncompagni Ludovisi Villino, an Eclectic style residence built in the early twentieth century. Located on Via Boncompagni, a side street of the famous Via Vittorio Veneto, the museum presents the decorative arts, costume design and Italian fashion across two centuries. Admission is free.

History

The building was the former residence of the Boncompagni Ludovisi family. In 1972, Princess Blanceflor de Bildt Boncompagni bequeathed the villa to the Italian State through a testamentary disposition, with the stipulation that it be maintained and used exclusively for artistic and cultural purposes of public utility.

The museum opened to the public in 1995. It was initially managed by the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art before being incorporated into the Lazio museum complex in December 2014. Today it is operated by Polo Museale del Lazio.

What you see

The Villino exemplifies the Eclectic architectural style prevalent in early twentieth-century Rome. The villa’s design reflects the tastes of its aristocratic residents, combining classical and contemporary elements typical of the period.

Cultural significance

The museum preserves and presents the evolution of Italian decorative arts, costume and fashion across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection serves as a record of Italian aesthetic refinement and design traditions during a formative period in modern fashion and applied arts.
