Overview
Ascona, a municipality in the district of Locarno on the shore of Lake Maggiore, has attracted artists, writers, and intellectuals since the early twentieth century. The town’s famous hilltop colony Monte Verità drew expressionists, Dadaists, and reformers from across Europe between 1900 and 1920, establishing a creative legacy that still defines Ascona’s cultural identity. The Museum of Modern Art is the institutional heir of that tradition, presenting works by artists connected to the region and to broader European modernism.
History
Ascona’s role as an art colony began in earnest with the Monte Verità community, which from 1900 attracted figures such as Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings, and numerous expressionist painters seeking an alternative to urban industrial life. The town subsequently developed a network of galleries and cultural venues that consolidated its reputation as Switzerland’s open-air art district. The Museum of Modern Art formalised this heritage by creating a dedicated space for systematic collection, display, and study of modern works, with particular emphasis on the Ticino and Verbano region’s artistic output.
What you see
The museum’s galleries display painting, sculpture, and works on paper by modern and contemporary artists, with rotating exhibitions complementing a permanent collection. A highlight of the visitor experience is the virtual 3D tour, which replicates the spatial qualities of the galleries digitally and allows remote exploration of the collection. The setting on the Ticino lakeside adds a distinctive atmospheric quality, with views of Lake Maggiore visible from the surrounding streets and piazzas.
Cultural significance
Ascona’s position at the intersection of Swiss, Italian, and German cultural traditions gives its modern art institution a uniquely cosmopolitan character. The Monte Verità legacy ensures the museum operates within a lineage of artistic experimentation that shaped European modernism. Its commitment to digital access via 3D virtual tours reflects a contemporary mission to democratise heritage beyond physical borders.
