Archaeological Park of Neapolis

One of Sicily’s most significant archaeological areas, this vast park preserves monuments spanning multiple periods of Syracuse’s history, from prehistoric settlements to Norman times.

At a glance

The Archaeological Park of Neapolis constitutes the fundamental nucleus of the larger Archaeological Park of Syracuse. Covering an exceptionally large area, it ranks among the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, containing layers of evidence from Bronze Age settlements through the Norman period.

History

The park encompasses remains from multiple eras of Syracusan civilization. Prehistoric testimonies include Bronze Age settlements of the Castelluccio, Thapsos, and Cassibile facies. Classical antiquity is represented by the monumental public architecture of ancient Syracuse, while later periods include Roman construction and a Norman church.

What you see

The Greek Theater stands among the park’s most celebrated monuments. The Sanctuary of Apollo, the ara of Hiero, and the Roman amphitheater demonstrate the site’s architectural range and historical continuity. A vast necropolis known as Grotticelli contains numerous burials, while extensive stone quarries (latomie) reveal ancient extraction methods. The Norman church of San Nicolò represents later occupation of the site. The Via dei Sepolcri and the Nymphaeum area provide additional insights into daily life and ritual practice.

Cultural significance

As a comprehensive record of Syracuse’s urban development across centuries, Neapolis documents the transformation of one of antiquity’s most powerful Greek colonies into a Roman city and later medieval settlement. The sheer quantity and variety of monuments make it an essential resource for understanding Mediterranean civilization and architectural evolution.
