Abruzzo Region

A mountainous region in central Italy, formally established in 1233 and administratively separated from Molise in 1970, encompassing four provinces and some of the Apennines’ highest peaks.

At a glance

Abruzzo straddles Italy’s Adriatic coast and its interior highlands, creating two distinct landscapes. The eastern seaboard opens onto the Adriatic; westward, dramatic mountain ranges dominate. This geographical duality has shaped the region’s identity for nearly eight centuries.

History

In 1233, Frederick II of Swabia formally established the Giustizierato d’Abruzzo, marking the first official historical identification of this territory. The region remained administratively unified with Molise until the 1963 constitutional reform; both regions became fully operational in 1970 following the separation.

What you see

Abruzzo comprises four provinces—L’Aquila, Chieti, Pescara, and Teramo—distributed across 305 municipalities. The coastal zone features beaches and maritime settlements along the Adriatic. The western interior rises dramatically through forested slopes and alpine terrain, crowned by three major massifs that rank among Italy’s most imposing mountain systems.

Cultural significance

The region represents a crucial threshold in Italian geography and culture, bridging Mediterranean coastal traditions with Apennine mountain heritage. Its long documented history anchors central Italian identity and its topographical extremes—from sea-level beaches to peaks exceeding 2,900 metres—encapsulate the dramatic landscape that defines the Italian peninsula’s spine.
