Lhasa’s Historic Ensemble — inscribed 1994 (extended 2000, 2001) — includes the Potala Palace (1,000 rooms, 13 stories, winter residence of the Dalai Lamas), the Jokhang Temple (641 CE, the most sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism), and the Norbulingka summer garden palace. Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse is 4 hours west.
Zanzibar’s Stone Town — inscribed 2000 — is the former capital of the Busaidi Sultanate: 500+ carved wooden doors, the Old Fort, and the Anglican Cathedral built on the demolished slave market. Freddie Mercury was born in Stone Town in 1946. The Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani (medieval gold trade, Swahili Coast) are 5 hours south by road and boat.
Potosí — inscribed 1987, on UNESCO’s Danger List since 2014 — was the largest city in the Western Hemisphere in 1650, sustained by the Cerro Rico silver mountain that financed the Spanish Empire. The Casa de la Moneda (largest colonial building in South America) and the Colonial churches are open. Sucre is 3.5 hours northeast.
Carcassonne’s fortified city — inscribed 1997 — is the best-preserved double-walled medieval fortress in Europe: 52 towers built in the Visigothic period and expanded after the 1209 Cathar Crusade. The Canal du Midi runs through the valley below; the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct is 2 hours east.
Hampi’s Group of Monuments — inscribed 1986 — preserves the ruins of Vijayanagara, a city of 500,000 people and capital of the last great Hindu empire of India, sacked and destroyed in 1565. Pattadakal’s Chalukya temples are 3 hours northwest; Badami’s rock-cut cave sanctuaries are 4 hours northwest.
Kotor’s Natural and Culturo-Historical Region has been inscribed since 1979 — the fortified medieval city embedded in the Bay of Kotor, the best-preserved Venetian walled city on the eastern Adriatic. Dubrovnik is 1 hour south; Mostar’s rebuilt Ottoman bridge is 3 hours northwest.
Mostar’s Old Bridge Area is inscribed since 2005 for the rebuilt Stari Most — the Ottoman arch bridge destroyed by war in 1993 and reconstructed in 2004 as a symbol of reconciliation. The Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad is 3.5 hours northeast; Dubrovnik is 2.5 hours south; Kotor is 3 hours southeast.
Bagan was inscribed in 2019 for its more than 3,500 Buddhist temples built between 849 and 1287 CE on a 40-square-kilometre Irrawaddy plain — the world’s most extensive concentration of Buddhist monuments. Mandalay’s last royal Burmese palace is 4 hours south; Inle Lake’s stilt villages are 1 hour by air.
Yazd — inscribed in 2017 as Iran’s first living historic city — is the best-preserved earthen architecture city in the world and the global centre of Zoroastrianism. Isfahan’s Safavid palaces are 3 hours northwest; Persepolis’s Achaemenid ruins are 4 hours south via Shiraz — central Iran’s heritage circuit.
