The Baekje Historic Areas (UNESCO 2015) span eight component sites across Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan in South Korea, representing the Baekje kingdom’s final two centuries before its defeat in 660 CE. Nearby UNESCO sites include the Gochang Dolmen Sites (60 km south), Gyeongju Historic Areas (150 km east) and Haeinsa Temple with the Tripitaka Koreana (200 km east).
Namhansanseong, rebuilt from 1624 and 25 km southeast of Seoul, held out 45 days against the Manchu siege in 1637. Changdeokgung, Jongmyo, the Joseon Royal Tombs, and Hwaseong Fortress are all within 40 km and reachable by metro or express bus.
Hahoe village (Andong) and Yangdong village (near Gyeongju) have been occupied by single clans for over five centuries. Yangdong is 30 km from Gyeongju’s UNESCO historic areas; Hahoe is 80 km from Gyeongju and 170 km from Seoul by express bus.
The Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty (UNESCO, 2009) comprise 40 tombs across 18 clusters within 30–60 km of Seoul. Changdeokgung, Jongmyo Shrine, and Hwaseong Fortress are all reachable by metro or train from the tomb sites.
Jeju’s Hallasan volcano last erupted 25,000 years ago; the Geomunoreum lava tubes beneath the island stretch 7.4 kilometres. A one-hour flight connects Jeju to Seoul, where Changdeokgung, Jongmyo, and Hwaseong Fortress form a dense cluster of further UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Gyeongju Historic Areas (UNESCO 2000) preserve 1,000 years of Silla Kingdom capital in five city zones including 23 royal burial mounds and the 647 CE Cheomseongdae observatory. Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto are 15 km by bus; Haeinsa and Hwaseong Fortress reachable by KTX.
The Longmen Grottoes at Luoyang contain 2,345 caves carved into limestone cliffs over four centuries, holding 100,000 Buddhist images and the most important collection of Wei and Tang calligraphy in China. The 17-metre Vairocana Buddha at the Fengxian Temple was funded by Empress Wu Zetian; hundreds of carved heads were removed by art dealers in the 20th century and are now in Western museums.
The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor near Xian holds approximately 8,000 terracotta soldiers discovered in 1974, along with 130 chariots and 670 horses. The main burial mound, standing 76 metres tall, has never been excavated; geophysical surveys in 2016 confirmed mercury levels 100 times normal in the surrounding soil, corroborating a 2,100-year-old written account of mercury rivers inside.
The Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) covers 294 hectares northwest of Beijing, with Kunming Lake — excavated by 50,000 workers — covering 75% of the total area. The current structures date from Empress Dowager Cixi’s 1886–1895 reconstruction after Anglo-French forces burned the original complex in 1860; the Forbidden City is 12 kilometres east and the Great Wall at Badaling 80 kilometres north.
The Temple of Heaven is a 273-hectare complex in southern Beijing where Chinese emperors performed the winter solstice sacrifice to Heaven every year from 1420 to 1911 — a ritual running without interruption for 491 years. UNESCO inscribed it in 1998; the Forbidden City is 4 kilometres northwest and the Summer Palace 16 kilometres northwest.
