The Yellow Sea–Bohai Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (Phase I 2019, Phase II 2023) cover intertidal habitat across five Chinese provinces supporting 5.5 million migratory birds annually. The Korean Getbol tidal flats (UNESCO 2021) are 300 km east across the same Yellow Sea. Inland connections include Shennongjia forest (600 km south) and Qinghai Hoh Xil (2,000 km west).
The Chengjiang Fossil Site (UNESCO 2012) preserves 228 Cambrian species in fine-grained shale 52 km south of Kunming. Macao’s Historic Centre (UNESCO 2005) covers 30 heritage components on a peninsula 65 km from Hong Kong, where Portuguese and Chinese architecture have coexisted since 1557. The Kaiping Diaolou are 280 km north, Kulangyu island 600 km northeast, the Fujian Tulou 700 km northeast, and West Lake Hangzhou 1,200 km north along the Grand Canal trade corridor.
The Koguryo UNESCO sites at Ji’an, Jilin Province (2004), include 39 royal tombs and Wandu Mountain City, 230 km east of Tonghua. The Baekje Historic Areas in South Korea (400 km south by flight) are Koguryo’s closest cultural parallel, followed by Changdeokgung Palace and Namhansanseong Fortress in Seoul and the Seowon Neo-Confucian Academies.
Xanadu (Shangdu), inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2012, was Kublai Khan’s summer capital 350 km north of Beijing where Marco Polo was received in 1275 CE and which inspired Coleridge’s poem. Xinjiang Tianshan (UNESCO 2013) covers 606,833 hectares across four clusters in Xinjiang; its glaciers feed rivers used by an estimated 800 million people in Central Asia. West Lake Hangzhou sits at the canal’s southern terminus; the Liangzhu ruins (30 km north) predate the canal by 3,500 years; the Classical Gardens of Suzhou are 200 km northeast (1h HSR); the Forbidden City stands at the canal’s northern terminus.
The Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces (UNESCO 2013) covers 16,603 hectares of irrigated terraces in Yuanyang County, Yunnan, built over 1,300 years without mechanical pumps. South China Karst Shilin is 300 km west (3h via Kunming); the Old Town of Lijiang is 450 km northwest (5h road or 2.5h HSR from Kunming).
