University House
A streamlined Art Deco landmark on Newcastle’s King Street, originally built as the administrative headquarters of the city’s electricity council and now home to the University of Newcastle library.
At a glance
University House stands at the corner of King Street and Auckland Street in Newcastle. Designed by Emil Sodersten in association with the local firm Pitt and Merewether, the building exemplifies Art Deco principles adapted from contemporary European modernism. Its streamlined functionalism remains a striking presence in the streetscape.
History
Construction ran from 1937 to 1939 for the Newcastle Electricity Supply Council Administration, originally known as N.E.S.C.A House. The interior, designed by Guy Allbut, combined demonstration theatre, showroom, offices and staff accommodation in a single efficient program.
Shortland County Council expanded the building in 1959 with a three-storey rear extension, followed by a tower addition in 1967 and further remodelling in 1969–1970. After the council relocated in 1987, a radio station and architectural practice occupied the space. The 1989 Newcastle earthquake caused only cosmetic damage. In 1995, the University of Newcastle established a library within the building, transforming its public purpose.
What you see
The building displays Art Deco vocabulary—clean lines, geometric form, and horizontal emphasis—informed by European functionalism of the interwar period. Original features include the demonstration theatre and showroom spaces, though later additions and modifications have altered the interior layout. The tower insertion and rear extension represent mid-twentieth-century adaptations to changing municipal needs.
Cultural significance
University House documents Newcastle’s industrial and administrative history while exemplifying how Art Deco principles migrated to Australia’s regional cities. It marks the evolution of public institutional buildings from single-purpose monuments to multipurpose civic facilities. The structure’s survival and adaptive reuse as a university library reflects broader heritage conservation practices in contemporary Australia.
