Civic Museum of Asolo
The Civic Museum of Asolo is the principal public collection of the hilltop town of Asolo in the province of Treviso, Veneto, preserving archaeological finds, paintings, and objects that document the town’s layered history from Roman settlement to its Renaissance golden age as court of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus. Housed in the town’s historic centre, the museum brings together material culture spanning more than two millennia, reflecting Asolo’s status as one of the most celebrated small towns in northern Italy — known as “The Pearl of the Province of Treviso” and “The City of a Hundred Horizons.”

Overview
Asolo is a walled hill town in the Treviso foothills, listed among I Borghi più belli d’Italia (The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) and celebrated for its panoramic views over the Veneto plain and the Pre-Alps. The Civic Museum gathers the material evidence of this long inhabited landscape: Roman-era inscriptions and ceramics, medieval and Renaissance paintings, and memorabilia connected to the extraordinary figures who chose Asolo as home — including the poet Robert Browning and the explorer-writer Freya Stark. The museum serves as the town’s collective memory, anchoring contemporary tourism in substantive historical understanding.
History
Asolo’s most illustrious chapter opened in 1489 when Caterina Cornaro, former Queen of Cyprus, was compelled to abdicate her throne and was granted the town by the Venetian Republic as a gilded exile. She established a brilliant humanist court here that attracted Pietro Bembo, whose dialogues De Asolani (1505) immortalised the town in Italian literary history. The Civic Museum was formally established to collect and preserve the archaeological and artistic legacy of this rich past, incorporating finds from Roman Acelum — Asolo’s ancient predecessor — and works accumulated by the town’s noble families.
What you see
The museum’s galleries display Roman epigraphs, funerary reliefs, and everyday objects recovered from the ancient town of Acelum, alongside medieval and Renaissance paintings by Veneto masters. A section devoted to Caterina Cornaro and her court contextualises the artistic and intellectual life of fifteenth-century Asolo. Personal effects, portraits, and documents connected to Robert Browning — who spent his final years in the town — form another distinctive highlight, as does a collection of local crafts and historical photographs illustrating life in the Asolano hills across the centuries.
Cultural significance
Asolo’s Civic Museum safeguards a narrative that connects Roman provincial life, Venetian Renaissance court culture, and the romantic literary tourism of the nineteenth century within a single coherent collection. The town’s designation as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages and its association with internationally renowned cultural figures give the museum an importance well beyond its modest size. It is an essential stop for anyone seeking to understand the depth of artistic and intellectual life that flourished in the Veneto hills.
