Magdeburg Cathedral

Germany’s oldest Gothic cathedral, begun in 1209 and crowned with twin spires a century later, holds the tomb of Emperor Otto I the Great and stands as Magdeburg’s defining landmark.

At a glance

Officially the Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine, Magdeburg Cathedral is a Lutheran house of worship and the principal church of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. Its north tower reaches 100.98 metres; the south spire stands 99.25 metres—among eastern Germany’s tallest. The cathedral endures as both spiritual centre and civic symbol.

History

A monastery church dedicated to Saint Maurice occupied this site from 937. The Gothic cathedral rose over three centuries beginning in 1209, with its distinctive twin steeples completed only in 1520. The cathedral served as the principal church of the former Prince-Archbishopric of Magdeburg before the Reformation. Though repeatedly looted through the centuries, it survives as a repository of art spanning from medieval antiques to contemporary works.

What you see

Gothic architecture dominates the structure. Two soaring towers frame the eastern façade—the northern reaching slightly higher at just over 101 metres. The three-century construction span left its mark in evolving Gothic idioms across walls, vaults and tracery. Interior spaces shelter sculptures, altarpieces and furnishings accumulated across five hundred years.

Cultural significance

Magdeburg Cathedral represents a watershed in German ecclesiastical architecture as the nation’s first Gothic cathedral. It embodies the continuity of Christian worship from the early medieval period through to the present day. The burial of Otto I—the tenth-century Holy Roman Emperor—links the structure to German imperial history. Today it serves as the spiritual heart of Magdeburg and a landmark visible across the Saxony-Anhalt capital.
