Palazzo Mazzetti
A baroque palace in the heart of Asti that now houses the city’s civic art gallery, showcasing centuries of regional heritage within its carefully restored rooms.
At a glance
Palazzo Mazzetti overlooks Corso Alfieri, Asti’s principal thoroughfare, and serves as the seat of the Civic Art Gallery. The palace combines baroque architecture with a layered history spanning from medieval strongholds to contemporary museum spaces. Its interiors encompass archaeological displays, period rooms, and rotating civic collections.
History
The site originally housed a fortified stronghold belonging to the Turco family. A 1442 purchase document records the Mazzetti di Frinco family acquiring Turco assets, though the palace sale itself remains undocumented. Over the seventeenth century, the Mazzetti gradually consolidated scattered properties through acquisition before undertaking the palace’s construction.
Major building phases occurred in 1730, when the gallery on the first floor was completed, and 1751, when the façade, atrium, staircase and eastern rooms were added. The Cassa di Risparmio di Asti acquired the palazzo in 1937 and granted its use to the Municipality three years later. Since 2001, the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation has owned it. A comprehensive restoration concluded in December 2011, reopening the palace to public view.
What you see
The baroque façade—completed in 1751—frames an entrance that leads to an atrium and monumental staircase. The cellar level contains pantries and an ice storage room, remnants of the palace’s domestic operations. The noble floor preserves historical rooms furnished and decorated in period style, while the upper level houses the Pinacoteca (picture gallery).
Cultural significance
Palazzo Mazzetti embodies Asti’s transition from medieval fortress town to baroque cultural center. Its transformation from private residence to public art institution reflects broader European trends in democratizing heritage. The palazzo’s collections represent civic identity and regional artistic achievement across multiple centuries.
