Archaeological Museum of Turin
Home to Greek-Roman antiquities and artifacts of ancient Piedmont, this museum traces centuries of collecting by the Savoy dynasty and preserves remains of Turin’s Roman theater.
At a glance
The Archaeological Museum of Turin holds Greek-Roman collections alongside material evidence of the region’s pre-Roman and Roman past. The museum’s galleries overlook the substantial remains of an ancient Roman theater, connecting visitors directly to the city’s classical heritage.
History
The museum was established in 1940 following a significant institutional reorganization. The Greek-Roman and Egyptian collections of the Royal Museum of Greek-Roman Antiquities and Egyptians—assembled by the House of Savoy from the sixteenth century onward—were divided. The Egyptian holdings were separated to form the basis of the current Egyptian Museum, while the Greco-Roman material became the core of this institution.
In 2016, the Archaeological Museum ranked as the twenty-second most visited Italian state site, drawing 314,195 visitors as part of the larger Royal Museums of Turin complex.
What you see
The museum’s gallery spaces include dedicated rooms documenting the history of Turin itself, many with views overlooking the remains of the Roman theater—a testament to the city’s ancient urban fabric. The collection encompasses numerous artifacts testifying to ancient Piedmont’s cultural development.
Cultural significance
The museum represents centuries of ducal patronage and connoisseurship, preserving one of Europe’s most important private collections of classical antiquities. Its role within the larger Royal Museums of Turin complex—which also encompasses the Royal Palace, the Sabauda Gallery, and the Royal Armory—underscores the interconnected nature of Piedmont’s artistic and historical treasures accumulated over generations.
