Villa del Balbianello

The most filmed promontory in Italy and the most visited FAI property — Villa del Balbianello (Tremezzina; Lake Como; FAI since 1988) occupies a rocky headland above the western shore of Lake Como, its double-loggia crown and terraced gardens positioned for a view across Lario that Cardinal Durini designed in 1787 CE as an aesthetic manifesto, and that two Hollywood productions discovered 200 years later as the most cinematic garden in the world.

Key facts

  • The Balbianello cinema legacy (how a 18th-century garden became the most filmed villa in Italy): Villa del Balbianello has appeared in at least 11 films and television productions, more than any other Italian villa; the key appearances: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002; George Lucas; the loggia-and-cypress south terrace was the wedding location of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala; the scenes were shot on location — the CGI backdrop is added, but the architecture and garden are real and unchanged; the specific view used in the film can be reproduced by standing at the south terrace edge and looking northeast across the lake); Casino Royale (2006; Martin Campbell; Daniel Craig as James Bond recovering from poison, being nursed in a lakeside villa — the Villa del Balbianello exterior and interior were used for the “Villa Vesper” where Bond is brought to recover; the 2006 film re-launched the Bond franchise and was seen by over 100 million people, making Villa del Balbianello the most globally recognized Italian garden); the villa’s cinematographic qualities are: the double-loggia crown (visible from the lake at 300m, creates an instantly recognisable silhouette), the narrow headland (makes it appear isolated and romantic from any angle), and the mountain-over-lake backdrop (creates natural green-screen depth for any shot)
