Sintra is a UNESCO-listed palace town nestled in the wooded hills above Lisbon, Portugal, celebrated for its extravagant Romantic architecture and the first cultural landscape to receive World Heritage designation in Europe.

History

A royal summer residence since the medieval period, Sintra flourished under King Ferdinand II of Portugal, who transformed the ruins of a Hieronymite monastery into the fantastical Pena Palace between 1838 and 1854. The surrounding hills, dotted with palaces and quintas of rival noble families, became a canvas for 19th-century Romantic idealism. The cultural landscape was inscribed by UNESCO in 1995, recognising its blend of built heritage and designed gardens as an exceptional artistic achievement.

What to See

Pena Palace erupts from the hilltop in a polychrome riot of Manueline, Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance styles. The Quinta da Regaleira is renowned for its Initiatic Well, a spiralling underground staircase used in esoteric ceremonies. The Moorish Castle, rebuilt in the 8th century, offers breathtaking ridge-top walks. The National Palace in the town centre, with its distinctive twin conical chimneys, is the oldest surviving royal palace in Portugal.

Getting There

Sintra is 28 km northwest of Lisbon. Direct trains run every 20 minutes from Lisbon Rossio station in under 45 minutes. From Sintra station, local buses and tuk-tuks reach the hilltop palaces.
