Independence Hall
The birthplace of American democracy. Independence Hall witnessed the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, securing its place as one of the world’s most consequential civic buildings.
At a glance
Independence Hall stands as the physical and symbolic heart of American founding. Originally named Pennsylvania State House, this Georgian masterpiece was completed in 1733 and immediately recognized as “the greatest ornament in the town.” Today it anchors Independence National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
History
The building first served as the colonial capitol of Pennsylvania. During the Revolutionary War, the Second Continental Congress met here from 1775 to 1781, establishing the Continental Army on June 14, 1775. The Declaration of Independence was adopted within these walls on July 4, 1776.
From May 25 to September 17, 1787, Independence Hall hosted the Constitutional Convention, where delegates debated, drafted, and ratified the U.S. Constitution. In 1915, former president William Howard Taft presided over a convention here that formed the League to Enforce Peace.
What you see
The building exemplifies American Georgian architecture through its symmetrical facade, classical proportions, and harmonious combination of exposed brick with stone masonry accents. Independence National Historical Park surrounds the hall, creating a buffer zone that separates the historic structure from surrounding urban development.
Cultural significance
Independence Hall embodies liberty, democracy, and the founding principles of the United States. Its role in drafting and adopting both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution makes it invaluable to American identity and world democratic history.
