Ancient Village of Ozzano Monferrato

A medieval village in the heart of Monferrato with a well-preserved historic center, where Gothic-Renaissance frescoes, Baroque altarpieces, and traces of industrial heritage tell centuries of feudal and artistic achievement.

At a glance

Ozzano Monferrato preserves an uncontaminated medieval layout across its historic core. The village draws visitors for its artistic treasures, architectural fragments spanning five centuries, and integration within the UNESCO-recognized wine landscapes of Piedmont’s Monferrato region.

History

Ozzano first appears in historical records through acts of Saint Evasio, who sought refuge here while fleeing Arian persecution. The village’s feudal character developed under the jurisdiction of the Bishops of Vercelli and the Marquises of Monferrato, shaping its governance and growth.

In 1521, Mercurino Arborio Gattinara—chancellor to Emperor Charles V—purchased the fiefdom, an acquisition likely tied to commissions for notable frescoes in the parish church. This patronage marked a Renaissance flourishing. The 15th and 16th centuries left traces in surviving fortification walls, a curtain tower, and the remarkable Bonaria house, a rare example of 15th-century domestic architecture. The 19th century introduced industrial development centered on lime and cement extraction, creating a secondary layer of heritage visible today.

What you see

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta combines Gothic-Renaissance frescoes with Baroque-period refinements, including valuable altarpieces that shaped its current interior. Medieval defensive structures—fragments of ancient walls and a curtain tower—remain legible within the village fabric.

Villa Barbano and the Castle (now Visconti property) feature 19th-century gardens, anchored by a centuries-old cedar of Lebanon. The neo-Gothic church of San Giovanni Battista, surrounded by vegetation, reflects later romantic tastes. Industrial-archaeology sites at Reg. Fontanola document the village’s cement and lime heritage.

Cultural significance

Ozzano embodies the layered history of Piedmont’s Monferrato plateau. Its medieval street plan remains readable, while artistic commissions from the Renaissance courtier Gattinara linked the village to imperial power networks. In 2015, Ozzano was designated part of the UNESCO Core Zone for “The Wine Landscapes of Piedmont” under the component “Il Monferrato degli Infernot,” affirming its place within a broader landscape of cultural and agricultural heritage.
