Overview

Zambrone is a comune in the Province of Vibo Valentia, in the Italian region of Calabria. It is located about 60 kilometres southwest of Catanzaro and about 9 kilometres northwest of the provincial capital, Vibo Valentia. The municipality covers an area of roughly 14.4 square kilometres and sits along the Tyrrhenian coast.

History

Like many settlements along the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast, Zambrone developed inland on higher ground, with its associated marine hamlets along the shore. Its position on the Costa degli Dei, the coastline between Pizzo and Capo Vaticano, placed it within a region long shaped by Mediterranean trade and seafaring. The comune retains the dispersed pattern of a hilltop centre with coastal fractions typical of this part of Calabria.

What you see

Visitors find a compact village centre set back from the sea, with views opening toward the Tyrrhenian and, on clear days, the Aeolian Islands. The surrounding coastline is marked by cliffs, small bays and sandy coves reached by paths down from the upper town. The landscape combines coastal scrub and cultivated terraces characteristic of the Vibo Valentia littoral.

Cultural significance

Zambrone forms part of the Costa degli Dei, one of Calabria’s most celebrated coastal stretches, valued for its scenery and seaside character. As a small Tyrrhenian comune it preserves the rural and maritime traditions of the Vibo Valentia province within a wider landscape of cultural and natural heritage.

Practical information

Zambrone is an open town that can be visited year-round, with the coastal coves most popular in the summer season. For opening times of any local services, beaches and facilities, check the official website of the comune.
