Villa Wallner
A sprawling Renaissance villa in the Veronese hills, shaped by five centuries of ownership and architectural ambition, now restored as a multifunctional venue.
At a glance
Villa Wallner is a complex of buildings whose original core dates to 1500, expanded and refined over centuries by successive owners. The estate occupies a prominent position in Montorio, crowned by its restored interiors and historic courtyard fountain.
History
The villa’s origins trace to the early 16th century. The Serego family, counts of the region, owned and enlarged it during the 16th and 17th centuries, establishing its architectural foundations. Lattanzio Fiorentino constructed the first major structures of the complex in 1777.
The Marquis Gherardini family undertook significant building works from 1630 onward, transforming the villa into the most imposing residence of Montorio. Their patronage elevated the estate to a level of distinction: it later housed the future Cardinal Gianfrancesco Barbarigo.
During the 19th century, lawyer Michelangelo Smania commissioned the fountain of Neptune in the internal courtyard and assembled an important collection of Greek and Latin epigraphs that enriched the villa’s scholarly character. The property is currently owned by Marta Wallner.
What you see
The villa presents a layered architectural narrative. Multiple building campaigns have created a complex of interconnected structures arranged around an internal courtyard, where Smania’s fountain of Neptune remains a focal point.
Recent restoration has balanced historical preservation with modern functionality, integrating contemporary systems while maintaining the villa’s composed elegance. The synthesis of period elements—stonework, fenestration, interior finishes—and thoughtful intervention creates spaces suited to diverse uses without compromising historical integrity.
Cultural significance
Villa Wallner embodies the evolving tastes and ambitions of Veneto’s landowning classes across four centuries. Each owner contributed materially to its form: Gherardini’s grandeur, Smania’s erudition, and later custodians’ stewardship.
The villa carries singular charm as a repository of lived history—a place where power, learning, and patronage intersected. Its epigraphic collection links Renaissance scholarship to its walls, while its architectural growth mirrors the region’s cultural and economic development.
